Are Cats Good Character Judges?
Dear Diary,
I’m convinced that cats are good judges of character. Even better than we humans are. We might get dazzled by the looks...
Cats, however, can sense good and evil in an instant.
Whenever I have a visitor, Jamie only takes a second to judge them. And he’s ruthless.
Either he tries to hide behind me and is rather shy, or he opens up immediately, and if you’re really lucky, you can give him a chin tickle.
I also noticed that he prefers men to women. No idea where this particular preference is coming from. Usually, you say male cats like women and the other way around. But hey ho.
I once had a plumber around, and it was love at first sight.
However, when my boss came, he ran away. Not sure what’s that gotta tell me.. I rather liked my boss. Maybe I was wrong?
Some say that if you’re a cat owner yourself, chances are higher that other cats like you. Doesn’t make a difference with Jamie. My boss has a cat… and not to mention the cat sitter he didn’t like at all.
When it comes to dog owners. I had mixed experiences. The reason is that most dogs like to be approached and showered with love. Whereas cats want to be the ones taking the first step. You need to be patient.
Also, some say cats are very sensitive to smell. So if you’re wearing a perfume, they might not like it at all and turn their back on you.
Another reason why they might reject you is if you’re simply trying too hard. You want to be loved no matter what, and you can be sure that the cat hates you. Ha.
I’m also convinced that cats can sense our emotions. So when you’re rather stressed, they might stay away from you. Whereas when you’re relaxed, they hang around.
How to become friends with a cat?
Remember that cats always take the first step.
So, let them sniff you first by simply reaching out your hand.
If they give you a head bump, you’re given the all clear, ready to stroke. If not, leave them.
Never, ever ran behind a cat. This will only scare them more.
With shyer cats, it helps if you just sit still for a while. They might turn around eventually when their curiosity wins over.
But cats have their own minds, so even if you follow the steps and avoid the no-goes, it’s not a guarantee that they’ll like you.
I always see it as a personal challenge. I give it a go whenever I come across a cat on the street or during my cat sits. Please let them like me.
